Adife Ahsen ÇETİN: What is liposuction and is it safe?
Dr. Nihal YUSUF: Lipo- means fat and -suction is the same meaning as the term. Hence it is a form of surgery which involves sucking out the fat from one’s body.
Is it safe? It is one of the most performed surgeries by cosmetic surgeons around the world, so of course it is safe. Every surgery has minor risks which come along with it and the anaesthesia associated with it, but doesn’t crossing a road or taking a shower have a risk too?
Traditional liposuction involves sucking out the fat with long rods which are inserted via tiny incision on the body. Science is always evolving and these days most centres have newer techniques of liposuction involving energy based devices which give improved results and quicker recovery.
Adife Ahsen ÇETİN: Who is the right candidate for liposuction?
Dr. Nihal YUSUF: Remember, liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. So it should not be done for obese patients. It is ideally done for patients post weight loss and work outs who have stubborn pockets of fat. Obese patients ideally require bariatric surgery which helps in weight loss.
Liposuction can be done literally in most parts of the body ranging from the face, neck, chest, arms, abdomen, back, thighs and legs.
The procedure can be done in all patients over the age of 18 unless there are any pre existing medical conditions in which case the patient has to be evaluated thoroughly.
Adife Ahsen ÇETİN: What are the complications of liposuction?
Dr. Nihal YUSUF: Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries and hence is one of the safest surgeries. Cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure and hence we do not take the patient in for surgery unless he/she is absolutely fit. The common post surgical symptoms one can have include bruising which lasts for a week or two and swelling which gradually reduces over weeks. Post operative pain is usually not severe as during surgery we inject local anaesthesia which makes the post surgery period comfortable and hence liposuction is performed mostly as a day care surgery. Uncommon complications include seromas, fat embolism and the complications associated with anaesthesia. Hence it is always advisable to undergo surgery in a state of the art hospital with adequate back up.
Adife Ahsen ÇETİN: Are there any post-operative tips to be kept in mind?
Dr. Nihal YUSUF: Post surgery, the patient is discharged on the same or next day. Because liposuction creates a dead space between the skin and muscle underneath we recommend wearing a compression garment 24×7 for a month. This helps in reducing the swelling and giving a better post surgical appearance in the long run. The patient is allowed to take a normal bath from the third post-operative day onwards. We teach each patient special massages which quickens the healing and recovery process and these massages are continued for a month. Cardio exercises can be restarted in 2 weeks and gym exertion after a month.
Adife Ahsen ÇETİN: Can you talk about the benefits of this operation?
Dr. Nihal YUSUF: Like mentioned earlier, liposuction is a body contouring procedure. It helps in contouring the shape of the body to a result desired by the patient. This usually aims at a V shaped torso for males and an hour glass appearance for females. Liposuction helps in getting rid of the stubborn pockets of fat which are usually resistant to work outs like the love handles, arms and thighs. Suctioned fat can be used to augment certain areas of the body especially the breasts, buttocks and face. This is superior to artificial implants and fillers as this uses tissue from your own body and is longer lasting.
With today’s advances in surgery, 3D sculpting is an option including ab etching. Imagine having 6 pack abs by the time you return home. But at the end of the day whatever magic a surgeon can perform, it is important that the patient maintains his weight and continues some form of physical exercise to stay fit.
Thank you Nihal Yusuf.
